Egypt’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Hany Swailem, held a meeting to review progress on developmental projects utilising treated agricultural drainage water in the New Delta, northern Sinai, and central Sinai regions.
Swailem highlighted ongoing efforts under the Irrigation 2.0 system, emphasising water treatment and reuse. New Delta Water Treatment Plant is 75 per cent complete, featuring 12 pumping stations and a 174-kilometre conveyance route.
The statement said that the two water conveyance routes from Bahr El-Baqar Treatment Plant, along 105 kilometres with 18 pumping stations, are 78 per cent complete.
Swailem stressed selecting crops suitable for treated water to boost economic returns and adopting modern farming techniques to enhance productivity while managing soil salinity.
The capacity of the three newly-built water treatment plants of New Delta, Bahr El-Baqar, and Al Mahsama facilities, stands at 4.8 million cubic metres annually. This infrastructure aims to address water scarcity and support the reclamation of agricultural lands in northern Sinai, central Sinai, and the western Delta.
