Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy on Sunday inspected development and modernisation projects worth more than 2 billion Egyptian pounds ($47.4 million) at the Amreya Petroleum Refining Company (APRC) in Alexandria, the ministry said.
The projects include restarting a hydrogen production unit with a capacity of 5,000 cubic metres per hour after a 13-year halt, expanding the upgrading and aromatics complex to boost gasoline output by about 100,000 tons annually and produce benzene, enhancing butane production to generate savings, and building a 12 km cooling water pipeline to strengthen operational sustainability.
Badawy said the initiatives aim to maximise the economic value of refinery infrastructure, meet local market needs, and curb the petroleum import bill.
APRC has also introduced energy conservation measures such as steam network upgrades, thermal insulation, and heat exchanger maintenance, which the ministry said have saved around 34 million pounds annually and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 7,700 tons.
