Egypt’s PM calls for more global support on migration at UN conference

Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly called for increased international support to address migration pressures as global economic challenges mount, according to a Cabinet statement issued Tuesday.

Speaking with International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope on the sidelines of the UN’s Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), the prime minister said Egypt is bearing a growing burden as regional instability fuels irregular migration and displacement.

He pointed to Egypt’s partnerships with European countries to expand legal migration pathways and seasonal labour programmes, highlighting the country’s skilled workforce and willingness to deepen collaboration with the IOM.

Prime Minister Madbouly also emphasised Cairo’s efforts to provide essential services to foreign nationals residing in Egypt, adding that international organisations have praised the country’s approach.

The meeting comes as Egypt pushes to strengthen its development financing and mitigate the impact of overlapping global crises on its economy and social infrastructure.
