Egypt’s PM reviews funding to secure medicine, medical supplies

Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Sunday held talks with ministers and senior officials to ensure the Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) has the financial resources needed to cover purchases of medicines and medical supplies and prevent debt build-up.

Madbouly said the government is committed to maintaining a safe stock of medicines through local production and imports, stressing the need for timely funding to keep the healthcare supply chain stable.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar highlighted efforts to localise pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports, while Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said new financing tools are being introduced to boost liquidity for drug companies.

UPA Chairman Hisham Stait said the authority’s new electronic procurement system prevents arrears to suppliers and supports the state’s strategy to strengthen national drug security.

The meeting also reviewed ways to settle dues owed to pharmaceutical companies as part of efforts to stabilise the sector.
