Egypt’s Police Says Brotherhood Torched Saudi Consulate Cars

Egyptian police accused the Muslim Brotherhood of torching two cars belonging to Saudi Arabia’s consulate in the city of Suez.

Three masked persons set the cars ablaze at dawn on Friday using Molotov cocktails, according to police, as reported by state news agency MENA.

Suez’s police chief, Major General Tarek El-Gazzar, said the identities of the perpetrators are now known to police and will be arrested.

El-Gazzar said attackers wanted to spread fear among the city’s residents on Friday in particular, when celebrations will take place for Suez governorate’s national day.

It’s not clear whether the car burning was political in nature.

Saudi Arabia has been one of Egypt’s staunchest allies following the ouster of Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Acts of vandalism and clashes with police have occurred since Morsi’s ouster, although now smaller in scale after a clampdown on the Islamist president’s supporters.
