Egypt’s rice production surges 44.8%, outpacing global trend – CAPMAS
Egypt’s agricultural sector achieved a remarkable feat in the 2022/2023 agricultural year, with rice production soaring to 6.2 million tons. This represents a substantial 44.8 per cent increase compared to the previous year, primarily driven by a significant expansion in rice cultivation.
As a result of this impressive growth, Egypt’s per capita rice consumption surged to 41.6 kilograms in 2022/2023. This marks a 44.9 per cent increase from the 28.7 kilograms consumed in the preceding year, according to data released by CAPMAS.
While Egypt’s rice production flourished, global rice production experienced a slight decline of 0.1 per cent to 525.6 million tons. Consequently, the average amount of rice consumed per person worldwide fell from 54.4 kilograms in 2021/2022 to 54.3 kilograms in 2022/2023.
