Egypt’s SCZONE signs $7m deal for first local smart-lock factory

Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) on Monday signed a contract with an alliance between Italy’s Mi-Fra and Saudi Masae to establish Egypt’s first plant producing metal door handles, traditional and smart locks, and office fittings. The move complements the state’s efforts to localise advanced manufacturing and cut import costs.

The plant will be developed within the MDC Industrial Zone in Ain Sokhna on a 15,000-square-metre site, with total investments exceeding $7 million, the authority said in a statement.

The first phase, worth $3 million, is expected to begin production in early 2027, with an annual output of 2.5 million hinges, 3 million door handles, and 3 million traditional and smart locks. It will include environmentally friendly metal-coating operations using PVD and UV technologies.

SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dein said the project supports the Authority’s strategy to expand value-added industries, strengthen supply chains for Egypt’s tourism and real-estate sectors, and reduce reliance on imported metal products. He added that SCZONE’s integrated industrial and port infrastructure has positioned it as an attractive destination for global investors.

The contract was signed by MDC Managing Director Waleed Youssef and Masae CEO Ahmed Zayed.
