Egypt’s Sisi appoints Akram El-Gohary head of state statistics agency
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has appointed Akram El-Gohary as head of Egypt’s state statistics agency with the rank of minister for a one-year term, according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Sunday.
Under Decree No. 90 of 2026, El-Gohary will lead the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) starting 14 Feb., replacing a previous decree issued in 2025. The appointment is made in accordance with the constitution and the law governing the agency.
The decree also named Tawfiq Abdel Gawad Qandil as deputy head of CAPMAS with the rank of deputy minister for one year, effective the same date.
CAPMAS is Egypt’s official body responsible for publishing key economic and social data, including inflation, population growth, labour market figures and gross domestic product statistics, which underpin government policy decisions and are closely watched by investors and international institutions.
