Egypt’s Sisi pushes 5G, digital infrastructure expansion to boost telecom sector

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with top government officials on Monday to review strategic plans for Egypt’s telecommunications sector, emphasising the expansion of 5G services, digital infrastructure, and local manufacturing, the presidency said.

During the meeting, Sisi was joined by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, Communications Minister Amr Talaat, presidential financial advisor Ahmed El-Shazly, and other senior officials. The discussions focused on strengthening a knowledge-based economy and accelerating nationwide access to high-quality internet and mobile services.

Minister Talaat highlighted recently launched initiatives, including 5G mobile services, WiFi Calling to improve coverage in low-signal areas, and the inauguration of the National Spectrum Monitoring Centre, equipped with advanced fixed, mobile, and portable monitoring stations to manage radio frequencies more efficiently.

The president also reviewed plans to expand fibre-optic networks and mobile towers nationwide, aiming to improve service quality in cities, villages, and underserved regions. Talaat noted that Egypt’s telecom sector has achieved annual growth of 14 per cent–16 per cent for seven consecutive years, contributing about 6 per cent to the country’s GDP.

Sisi stressed the importance of opening new horizons for the industry, supporting local production of telecom devices, developing data centres and cloud computing services, and creating mechanisms to encourage domestic products, the statement added.
