Egypt’s Suez Canal traffic rises in July–October as regional calm returns – chairman

Navigation activity through Egypt’s Suez Canal improved between July and October 2025, with 4,405 vessels carrying 185 million tons of cargo transiting the waterway, up from 4,332 vessels and 167.6 million tons in the same period a year earlier, head of canal’s authority said Tuesday.

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie said October alone saw the return of 229 ships — the highest monthly number of returning vessels since the start of the regional crisis.

Rabie discussed the figures during a meeting with representatives of 20 international shipping lines and agencies to review developments in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb region and their impact on global maritime trade.

The Egyptian official said the rebound was partly due to the positive effects of the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace, which helped ease regional tensions and encouraged more ships to resume using the canal.
