Egypt’s total energy supply reached 92,057 tons of oil equivalent in the 2022/2023 fiscal year, according to a new report released by the country’s official statistics agency CAPMAS on Monday. The report highlights key figures in energy supply, consumption, and foreign trade.
Total Energy Supply
Natural gas captured the lion’s share of energy supplies, constituting 53 per cent, followed by crude oil and petroleum products at 41 per cent, while other products made up 6 per cent.
Final Energy Consumption by Sector
Total final energy consumption stood at 58,646 tons of oil equivalent. The transport sector recorded the highest share at 38 per cent, followed by industry at 27 per cent, households at 21 per cent, and other sectors—including trade, services, agriculture, and government establishments—at 14 per cent.
Final Energy Consumption by Product
Petroleum products accounted for the highest share of consumption at 49 per cent. Electricity made up 25 per cent, while natural gas represented 21 per cent. Other products accounted for 5 per cent of total consumption.
Primary Energy Consumption
Total primary energy consumption reached 83,727 tons of oil equivalent. Electricity captured the largest share at 42 per cent, followed by petroleum products at 39 per cent and natural gas at 15 per cent. Biomass and waste, as well as coal and coke, each represented 2 per cent of primary energy consumption.
Electricity Trade
Egypt’s electricity exports stood at 107,000 tons of oil equivalent in 2022/2023, marking a 21.9 per cent decline from 137,000 tonnes of oil equivalent in 2021/2022. Electricity imports remained unchanged at 8,000 tons of oil equivalent in both years.
