Egypt’s WEPCO boosts output to record 8,300 bpd

Egypt’s Western Desert Operating Petroleum Co. (WEPCO) has lifted total output to 8,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day following a sharp increase in natural gas production, the petroleum ministry said on Tuesday.

The gain follows the successful testing and commissioning of the 10-5st development well in the Badr-1 field, targeting the Lower Kharita layer about 5,000 metres below sea level.

The well initially produced 25 million cubic feet of gas per day — equivalent to around 5,000 bpd — before stabilising at 12 million cubic feet of gas and 300 barrels of condensates daily to protect reservoir performance and maintain sustainable output.

The new well lifted WEPCO’s total gas production to 20 million cubic feet per day, marking a shift in the company’s strategy to tap mature fields and convert Badr-1 from a crude-only producer into a dual oil-and-gas asset.

WEPCO said it will continue exploration and development to bolster Egypt’s energy security and contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals.
