Embraer’s Eve unveils full-scale ‘flying taxi’ prototype
Eve, the electric aircraft maker controlled by Embraer, unveiled the full-scale prototype of its “flying taxi” at an event in Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil, marking a significant milestone as the company aims for certification and entry into service by 2026.
The electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype was showcased to investors and clients on July 3. Eve is among several startups worldwide developing battery-powered aircraft for short city trips to alleviate traffic congestion.
Eve plans to fly the prototype by late 2024 or early 2025, following the commencement of ground tests in July. The initial non-conforming prototype, equipped with electric engines but lacking a cabin or pilot, will eventually be a four-passenger aircraft with a pilot.
CEO Johann Bordais emphasised the importance of the full-scale prototype in the certification process, which began with an application to Brazil’s civil aviation regulator in 2022. By next year, Eve aims to have five conforming prototypes and a pre-series eVTOL ready by 2026.
Eve debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in 2022, raising nearly $400 million for its eVTOL project, originally estimated at $540 million. The company also secured a $92 million loan from Brazilian state development bank BNDES.
Recent fundraising efforts added $94 million from Embraer and Japan’s Nidec, extending Eve’s cash needs through 2027.
With nearly 3,000 potential orders, including from United Airlines, Global Crossing, and aircraft lessor Azorra, Eve aims to convert these into firm orders as development progresses.
