EU calls for U.S. to reconsider decision to cut ties with WHO
The European Union (EU) issued a statement on Monday asking the U.S. to reconsider its decision to cut ties with the World Health Organisation (WHO), Reuters reported.
“In the face of this global threat, now is the time for enhanced cooperation and common solutions. Actions that weaken international results must be avoided,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, in a statement.
“In this context, we urge the U.S. to reconsider its announced decision,” Leyen and Borrell said.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also spoke out against Donald Trump’s announcement, pledging talks with Washington on the issue, Reuters reported.
Trump’s decision is “the wrong signal at the wrong time,” Maas told German outlet Funke.
With the number of infections continuing to rise globally, “we cannot tear down the dike in the middle of a storm”, Maas said, according to Reuters.
