EU diplomacy chief calls for ‘long lasting’ truce in Gaza
The EU’s top foreign policy official Josep Borrell called on Sunday for an extension of the Gaza truce, which is due to end on Tuesday.
The truce has entered its final 24 hours on Monday and there are calls for extension worldwide.
“The pause should be extended to make it sustainable and long lasting while working for a political solution,” he said on Monday in Barcelona.
The statements were made at a meeting of the intergovernmental organisation Union for the Mediterranean.
He also called for a “political solution that should allow us to break the cycle of violence once and for all”.
In his most recent tweet, Borrel says that he is “appalled to learn that in the middle of a war, the Israeli gov is poised to commit new funds to build more illegal settlements.”
“This is not self-defense and will not make Israel safer.” he added.
Israel has so far killed around 20,000 innocent civilians, thousands of which are children.
