EU greenhouse gas emissions down 4% in Q1 ’24

The European Union’s (EU) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were estimated at 894 million tons of CO2-equivalents, marking a 4.0 per cent decrease from the same period in 2023. The EU’s GDP remained stable, with a slight increase of 0.3 per cent year-on-year.

Significant reductions in emissions were observed in the electricity and gas supply sectors by 12.6 per cent and households by 4.4 per cent. Among the 20 EU countries that reduced emissions, Bulgaria saw the largest drop by 15.2 per cent, followed by Germany by 6.7 per cent and Belgium by 6.0 per cent.

Notably, 8 of these countries also experienced declines in GDP, while the remaining 12 managed to lower emissions while growing their economies, indicating progress towards sustainable economic practices.
