EU hails Sharm El-Sheikh Gaza peace deal as ‘historic milestone’ pledges support

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday the finalisation of a peace agreement ending the war in Gaza in Sharm El-Sheikh would mark “a historic milestone.” She added that the European Union will be “active force” in postwar recovery and governance reforms.

In a statement issued ahead of the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace, von der Leyen said the EU stands “ready to contribute to its success with all tools at our disposal,” including financial support through the Palestinian Donors Group and assistance for the reform of the Palestinian Authority.

“Europe fully supports the peace plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye,” she said. “The return of the Israeli hostages is a moment of pure joy for those families, and a moment of relief for the entire world. It means that a page can be turned, and a new chapter can begin.”

Von der Leyen said the European Commission would provide EU funding for the reconstruction of Gaza.
