Euro area trade surpluses narrows in June ’25

Euro area trade surplus narrowed to €7.0 billion in June 2025 from €20.7 billion a year earlier, as import growth outpaced exports, data from Eurostat showed on Monday.

Exports edged up 0.4 per cent year-on-year to €237.2 billion, while imports jumped 6.8 per cent to €230.2 billion. On monthly basis, the euro area surplus fell from from €16.5 billion to €7.0 billion. The decline was driven mainly by weaker surpluses in chemicals, machinery and vehicles, and other manufactured products.

For January to June 2025, the euro area posted a surplus of €93.3 billion, down from €102.0 billion in the same period of 2024.

The wider European Union recorded an €8.0 billion surplus in June, compared with €20.3 billion a year earlier, as extra-EU exports were flat at €213.7 billion while imports rose 6.4 per cent to €205.7 billion.

The EU’s first-half surplus stood at €80.1 billion, against €92.9 billion a year earlier.
