European stock markets opened higher on Tuesday, as investors weighed earnings from prominent companies such as UBS AG , Alcatel-Lucent and Barclays PLC . The pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index gained 0.3% to 299.81, on track for a second straight day of gains.
Shares of UBS put on 1.4% after the financial institution said its investment bank swung to a profit in the second quarter. Shares of Alcatel-Lucent rallied 9% after the telecom-gear maker said it plans to find strategic partners to take small stakes in the firm.
On a more downbeat note, shares of Barclays slid 5.3% after the bank said it plans to issue 5.8 billion pounds ($8.9 billion) in new shares to address a capital shortfall. Among country-specific indexes, the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index climbed 0.2% to 6,575.20, while France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.3% to 3,982.46. Germany’s DAX 30 index picked up 0.4% to 8,290.29.
