Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg asked for forgiveness over the weekend for the divisive effect his social network has had on the country.
“For those I hurt this year, I ask forgiveness and I will try to be better,” Zuckerberg said Saturday in a Facebook post commemorating the end of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
Last week, Zuckerberg admitted he underestimated the impact of fake news and misinformation on Facebook during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The previous week, Facebook FB, +1.27% turned over about 3,000 Russia-linked ads to government investigators looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race, and announced new transparency measures for political ads.
It was also recently discovered that hate groups were able to use Facebook’s automated targeted advertising to spread anti-Semitic messages, leading the company to restrict certain ad targeting.
