Farouk, UNCTAD Deputy Chief discuss food security at UN Conference
Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk met with Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), at the UN headquarters in Geneva to explore avenues for cooperation on food security and sustainable trade.
The talks focused on enhancing Egypt’s food supply chains and boosting the country’s capacity to manage strategic reserves of essential goods. The two sides also discussed integrating Egypt into UN-led initiatives on sustainable food systems and fair trade.
Farouk reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to achieving food security and increasing resilience to global crises, underscoring the Ministry’s efforts to expand storage infrastructure, upgrade distribution systems, and manage subsidy mechanisms.
For his part, Moreno commended Egypt’s progress in improving food supply systems and expressed UNCTAD’s willingness to offer technical assistance and expertise to support Egypt’s trade and development goals.
