Foreign staff in Egypt’s public sector down 20.9% in 2024 – CAPMAS

The number of foreign employees in Egypt’s government and public sector fell 20.9 per cent in 2024 to 774, down from 978 a year earlier, the state statistics agency CAPMAS said on Monday.

Men made up 93.2 per cent of foreign workers, while women accounted for just 6.8 per cent, the agency said in its annual bulletin.

Europeans formed the largest group with 315 workers, or 40.7 per cent of the total, followed by non-Arab Asians at 20 per cent. Workers from Oceania, mainly Australia and New Zealand, represented the smallest share at just 2.1 per cent.

By education, nearly half of foreign staff (49.9 per cent) held university degrees, while 28.6 per cent held higher qualifications. Specialists in scientific professions made up the bulk of the workforce at 65.1 per cent, trailed by senior officials and managers at 14.5 per cent, and technicians and assistant specialists at 5.8 per cent.

Foreign employees were most concentrated in public authorities, which hired 42 per cent of the total, followed by public-business companies with 34.9 per cent. Nearly 79.5 per cent of foreign staff renewed existing contracts, while 20.5 per cent were hired on new contracts in 2024, according to CAPMAS.
