Fortescue Metals Group and Liebherr signed on Wednesday a $2.8 billion deal to create the world’s largest zero-emission mining fleet, advancing towards its goal of achieving zero emissions.
Fortescue and Liebherr have expanded their partnership to increase the mining fleet to 475 trucks from the initial 120.
Fortescue plans to purchase 360 autonomous battery-electric trucks, 55 electric excavators, and 60 battery-powered dozers to replace two-thirds of its current fleet.
This move aims to reduce carbon emissions, as the mining fleet currently consumes 450 million litres of diesel and accounts for 51 per cent of scope 1 emissions.
Fortescue is also exploring green iron production and hydrogen production from renewable resources.
