German retail sales recover in August ’24
Retail sales in Germany rose by 1.6 per cent in real terms in August 2024 compared to July, according to provisional data released on Thursday.
On an annual basis, turnover increased by 2.1 per cent in real terms and 3.1 per cent in nominal terms. This rebound follows declines in May and June, with a moderate increase of 1.5 per cent in July.
The retail sale of foodstuffs saw a 1.9 per cent rise in real terms month-on-month, while non-food products posted a 1.1 per cent gain. Internet and mail order trade surged by 8.9 per cent in real terms from the previous month, marking a significant 10.8 per cent increase compared to August 2023.
