Germany’s export expectations dip in June – ifo

Germany’s ifo Export Expectations index fell to -3.9 points in June from -3.0 in May, weighed down by continued uncertainty over potential US tariffs, the ifo Institute said on Tuesday.

“The tariff threats from the US are still on the table. An agreement between the EU and the US has yet to be reached,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “This uncertainty is lowering exporters’ expectations.”

The beverage industry saw the sharpest shift, with export optimism evaporating after strong sentiment in previous months. Food manufacturers’ expectations also dropped significantly, with many anticipating weaker international demand.

The automotive sector continued to signal weak export prospects, while mechanical engineering showed no clear movement. In contrast, manufacturers of leather goods, furniture, and electrical equipment reported a cautiously improved outlook.
