Global coal industry expected to lay off more than 4K miners by 2035

Coal industry is anticipated to lose over 400,000 mining jobs by 2035, this decline will occur even without climate commitments or policies aimed at phasing out coal, according to a new report by Global Energy Monitor on Monday.

The job losses highlight some of the social challenges that companies and governments face as they transition the world away from fossil fuels in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

China’s Shanxi province would witness the largest number of job losses globally — 2,41,900 by 2050 — while Coal India is the producer facing the largest potential job cuts of 73,800 by the mid-century.

Coal-mining jobs play a significant role in remote coal regions, acting as anchors of economic activity and sustaining ancillary workforces and employment in local consumer and information economies.
