Global smartphone shipments rise 6.5% in Q2

Global smartphone shipments rose by 6.5 per cent in the second quarter, driven by Samsung Electronics (18.9 per cent share), Apple (15.8 per cent share), and Xiaomi (14.8 per cent share), though full demand recovery remains elusive in some markets, according to IDC data.

This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of growth for global shipments as smartphone manufacturers leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to attract price-conscious consumers and gain market share.

“As Apple and Samsung both continue to push the top of the market and benefit the most from the ongoing premiumisation trend, many leading Chinese OEMs are increasing shipments in the low end in an attempt to capture volume share amid weak demand,” said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team.

The mid-range device market, however, remains challenged as a result.
