Hamas has announced plans to introduce Hebrew language classes at secondary schools in the Gaza Strip, in what its long-time rival faction Fatah described as the “deepening of the divide.”
Since 2007, Hamas has been in power in Gaza, while Fatah holds sway in the West Bank.
The scheme will be in place starting next year, Hamas Deputy Education Minister Ziad Thabet said.
But Jihad Zakarna, an education official from Fatah’s Palestinian Authority (PA) government, told the Maan news agency it would deepen “the divide between the enclave and the West Bank.”
The PA Education Ministry said the education program across the Palestinian territory was uniform and could not be changed.
