A company’s culture is a driving catalyst for its employees, retains high performing team members, delights customers, and supports the communities it serves. Often labelled the ‘backbone of success’, a company’s culture is only as fundamentally robust – and only as purposeful and useful – as its adoption and commitment to act upon it. At Amazon Egypt, we live with this mental model and take our culture very seriously, engaging our teams and customers to ensure we contribute at scale to a positive impact within our communities.
Being a large-scale logistics operator and goods provider, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to our community in a way that extends beyond our business operations, becoming a ‘force for good’ as we perceive. Our capacity management systems, enhanced tracking, as well as national and international routing solutions means we can provide fast, reliable, and customer focused services to provide impacts where and when needed.
We focus to support the people in our communities across the year, with Ramadan being a special time for our company culture to come to the fore. We are able to take advantage of our diverse capabilities and expansive network of collaborations, partners, and products, to directly address people’s pressing needs, where applicable.
A helping hand
Our efforts during Ramadan embody our ethos of spreading delight, happiness and solidarity within our community. By offering a wide range of value savings, benefits, and discounts to our customers, we can help ease financial burdens on individuals and families during the Holy Month, so they can share the spirit of generosity that is so important to embracing and celebrating Ramadan.
These efforts come to life with our Double the Good Initiative, where we were able to successfully donate Ramadan boxes filled with over 1,500 kilograms of food essentials to families in need in the ‘Istabl Antar’ neighborhood. We have also encouraged our customers across the country to join us in this important effort by supporting their purchase and sending Amazon Ramadan Boxes to a charity organisation of their choice or directly to families in need.
Ramadan is a chance to empower our core company culture – our internal philosophy – to be a force for good across the communities we serve year-round. On a more altruistic level, our teams of engaged and dedicated colleagues have come together to provide 500,000 iftar meals to families across Egypt as part of our annual meals’ donation programme, for the benefit of thousands of people.
That said, we will only achieve our purpose by focusing on what we understand and practice daily, by applying the principles and passion that brings delight and trust to our customers and communities.
This community-focused project is driven by passion; hundreds of staff going the extra mile, volunteering their time at scale to work alongside our NGO partners and strategic enablers of our charitable ambitions. They make vital contributions and a lasting difference to people across our nation.
Our global standard last-mile operations and nationwide delivery stations networks, powers the success of programmes including the meals donation programme. It provides the logistical knowledge required to collect and distribute tens of thousands of meals each Holy Month, with millions served since we initiated programme in 2019.
The meals donation programme is part of Amazon’s global community engagement pillar “Right Now Needs.” It provides food security and comfort to those who need it most and at a time of year when it means the most. It is embedded as a fundamental part of our culture, and an example of our pledge to action and implement purposeful deeds with impact.
Good foundations
While Ramadan is a time of charity and empathy, a truly effective culture of doing good should not be confound solely to the Holy Month.
With a focus as diverse as the products we ship to customers, we continue to support initiatives that have a scalable impact on our community, including upgrading an emergency room unit at the Children’s Cancer Hospital of Egypt, 57357 in September, 2023.
An initiative of national importance and a way of giving back to society’s most vulnerable, the renovation allowed the iconic hospital to continue to deliver incredible levels of care while maintaining its capacity to treat large numbers of children. This was followed up with the distribution of toys and games, to children receiving chemotherapy treatment at the hospital’s daycare facility.
We also drive a holistic approach to create sustainable impact in the community, which includes helping young Egyptians achieve their dreams and change their lives for the better. In the process, we’ve supported thousands of beneficiaries across the region with educational equipment, and back to school kits.
As we believe in the importance of food security as main factor to the development of our community in Egypt, we have further extended our cooperation with the Egyptian Food Bank beyond Ramadan as well. Amazon Egypt was thrilled to contribute to machinery upgrades to their food factories, enhancing packing efficiency by 20 per cent and reducing operational costs accordingly.
I am proud and humbled to witness that during my time serving as General Manager of Amazon Egypt, we have been able to contribute purposeful impacts, reflecting what our companies stands for and what we practice internally to the wider community we serve. Our goal to be a ‘force for good’ must first come from a place of ‘good.’
This is where our company culture excels; building a workplace that is diverse, inclusive, welcoming, supporting, and engaging – that puts the people first. We have seen countlessly without fail, that starting with our people at Amazon is how we become meaningful.
