Huawei to benefit if US maintains AI chip curbs on China

Huawei could gain ground in China’s AI chip market if the United States continues restricting semiconductor exports to the country, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC on Thursday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Viva Technology conference in Paris, Huang told CNBC, “Our technology is a generation ahead of theirs,” referring to Nvidia’s position in the AI semiconductor space.

However, he warned that Huawei is well-placed to dominate the Chinese market if US firms pull back. “If the United States doesn’t want to partake, participate in China, Huawei has got China covered — and Huawei has got everybody else covered,” Huang said.

Earlier this week, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei downplayed the company’s progress in comments to the ruling Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper. “The United States has exaggerated Huawei’s achievements. Huawei is not that great. We have to work hard to reach their evaluation,” Ren said, as reported by Reuters.
