Imam Yahya Hendi, a prominent Muslim-American Imam at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., visited Alexandria to give a public lecture on the relationship between Islam and democracy. The event took place at the general hall of the Engineering Syndicate in Shatby.
“The success of nations and peoples depends on their ability to achieve justice, freedom, security, and equality for all individuals regardless of their racial, religious, ideological, or political backgrounds, be they men or women,” said Imam Hendi. He continued by stating that “the role of women in building culture and civilization is not less significant than the role of men.”
Georgetown University is the first American university to hire a full-time Muslim chaplain. Imam Hendi is also the Imam of the Islamic Society of Frederick, Frederick, MD, and is the Muslim Chaplain at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Among other posts, he also serves as a member of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council of North America.
During his trip to Alexandria, Imam Hendi attended meetings with several people, including a group of interfaith religious leaders at Attarin Church, a group of women at the U.S. Consulate, and several Muslim sheikhs.
