The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will open a new Regional Presence Office (RPO) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in Alexandria, Egypt by the end of the year.
The office is set to open by the end of the year, following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Arab Republic of Egypt and the IMO headquarters in London, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport said earlier this month.
The MoU’s objectives include improving institutional capacity-building and the general maritime development in the MENA region; and strengthening self-reliance in the maritime field at national, subregional and regional levels.
The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Sherif Kamel, Egypt’s Ambassador in London, Admiral Reda Ahmed Ismail, Head of the Maritime Transport Sector, and Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the Organisation.
