Indian oil companies are interested in purchasing US liquefied natural gas (LNG) following the Trump administration’s decision to lift a ban on export permits for new projects, according to Oil Secretary Pankaj Jain on Monday.
India, currently the world’s fourth largest importer of LNG, plans to increase the proportion of gas in its energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030, up from the current 6.2 per cent.
Indian oil companies are in discussions with US companies for more LNG supply, including GAIL (India) Ltd, Indian Oil Corp, and Bharat Petroleum Corp.
The firms will discuss gas sourcing with suppliers of US LNG on the side-lines of the four-day India Energy Week conference from Monday, Jain told reporters.
