India is expected to achieve a record wheat production of 115.4 million metric tons in 2025, driven by increased planting of high-yielding seed varieties due to higher state-set guaranteed prices.
India, the second-largest wheat producer globally after China, harvested 113.3 million tons of wheat in 2024, as reported by the farm ministry. However, a prominent industry body noted a nearly 6.25 per cent decrease in the crop yield.
Earlier this year, Indian wheat prices reached a record high as supplies dwindled and flour mills faced strong demand, making it difficult for them to obtain enough grain to operate at full capacity.
India has resisted wheat imports, but a decrease in this year’s output may lead authorities to reduce or eliminate the 40 per cent import tax to allow private traders to ship overseas and address potential shortages.
