Irish DPC fines TikTok €345mln to protect Children’s privacy

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which oversees TikTok’s activities in the European Union (EU), has ordered the TikTok application to pay a €345 million ($368 million) fine after ruling that the app failed to do enough to protect children.

The company had violated the EU’s landmark signature privacy law, according to Irish DCP’s statement on Friday. The DPC’s decision gave TikTok three months “to bring its processing into compliance” with its rules.

The Irish privacy regulator said that, in 2020, TikTok had unlawfully made accounts of users aged 13 to 17 public by default, effectively making it possible for anyone to watch and comment on videos they posted.
