Jordan to witness 30% increase in olive production
Experts predicted on Monday a 30 percent increase in Jordan’s local olive oil production compared to the previous year’s harvest.
According to Jordan Times, this increase is significant in Jordan, which holds over ten million olive trees and 150 olive mills.
“Olive oil production is forecast to reach 30,000 tonnes… last year’s production was around 23,000 tonnes,” Olive Oil Producer and Mill Owner Syndicate Spokesperson Mahmoud Al Omari told the news outlet.
Around 80 percent of Jordan’s olive production is turned into oil, and 20 per cent is pickled, he added.
He also pointed out that the country’s annual per capita consumption of olive oil is only two kilogrammes, a “relatively small figure” for a country that produces olive oil.
According to Omari, the price of a 16 kg tin of olive oil is expected to be around 90 Jordanian Dinar, due to the global olive oil prices rising.
He also said that around 200,000 people are involved in the olive harvest season in Jordan.
