Jordan’s unemployment rate experienced a marginal decline in the second quarter of 2024, falling by 0.9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 21.4 per cent. The rate remained unchanged from the first quarter of 2024.
The report highlighted significant gender disparities. Male unemployment dropped to 18.9 per cent, down 1.1 per cent from last year, while female unemployment edged up to 31 per cent, a slight increase of 0.1 per cent. Quarterly data revealed an increase in male unemployment by 1.5 percentage points, whereas female unemployment decreased by 3.7 percentage points.
Education levels also influenced unemployment, with university graduates facing a 25 per cent unemployment rate. The report noted that women constituted 74.4 per cent of the highly educated labour force, compared to 36.9 per cent of men.
Regional disparities were also evident, with Balqa Governorate recording the highest unemployment rate at 24.5 per cent and Aqaba the lowest at 17.6 per cent.
