Microsoft eyes relocation for China-based AI staff

Microsoft is offering relocation opportunities to around 700-800 China-based employees specialising in machine learning and cloud computing due to tensions between the US and China, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The employees, mostly Chinese nationals, were offered the chance to transfer to countries like the US, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Microsoft clarifies it’s offering relocation options as a part of its regular business practices, its spokesperson told Reuters in a statement.

The company emphasised its continued commitment to China, stating it will maintain operations in the country alongside its presence in other markets.

This move comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and China. The Biden administration has recently increased tariffs on various Chinese imports, including electric vehicle batteries, computer chips, and medical supplies.

Additionally, Reuters reported earlier this month that the US Commerce Department is considering new regulations to restrict the export of certain types of artificial intelligence (AI) models.
