Microsoft to pour $2.2b into Malaysia’s cloud, AI growth

Microsoft plans a significant investment of $2.2 billion over the next four years in Malaysia to bolster cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services in the country, Reuters reported on Thursday.

This move marks Microsoft’s biggest commitment to its 32-year Malaysian presence, according to the statement.

The investment focuses on three key areas:

  • Building Cloud and AI Infrastructure: Microsoft will establish robust cloud and AI infrastructure within Malaysia, ensuring accessibility for organisations and startups nationwide.
  • Upskilling for AI: The company plans to equip 200,000 individuals with AI skills, fostering a talent pool adept in utilising this transformative technology.
  • Supporting Developers: Microsoft will provide dedicated support to Malaysian developers, empowering them to innovate and thrive in the AI landscape.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his visit to Kuala Lumpur said that company’s goal is to establish world-class infrastructure right here in Malaysia. This will ensure every organisation and startup can leverage its benefits.

Microsoft will partner with the Malaysian government to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence, further accelerating the country’s AI expertise. Additionally, the company aims to strengthen Malaysia’s cybersecurity capabilities.

Earlier this week, Nadella announced a $1.7 billion investment in neighboring Indonesia and revealed plans to launch its first regional data center in Thailand.
