Egypt’s ruling military council on Saturday officially notified the dissolution of the People’s Assembly (lower house of parliament) in line with a court verdict.
The General Secretariat of People’s Assembly received earlier Saturday a decision by head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi, who decided “to consider parliament dissolved” since Friday.
The Supreme Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday the unconstitutionality of some articles related to the parliament elections law, which gave the right to party members to compete for independent seats.
Lawmakers have been barred from entering the parliament except with permission.
However, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)’s Freedom and Justice Party called for a referendum on the dissolution, according to Xinhua.
