Minister Awad highlights private sector role in modernising waste services

Egypt’s Minister of Local Development, Manal Awad highlighted the critical role of private sector companies in effective solid waste management. This includes adhering to operational plans, promptly addressing challenges, and maintaining open communication with citizens to ensure their satisfaction.

Minister Awad made these remarks during her meeting on Tuesday with Hossam El-Din Imam, chairman of Nahdet Misr for Modern Environmental Services, to evaluate the company’s performance in managing solid municipal waste, including waste collection, transport, disposal, street sweeping, and cleaning services.

According to a Cabinet statement, the minister stressed the urgency of improving cleanliness standards in Alexandria, parts of Cairo, and Qalyubia, calling for stronger adherence to operational plans by private companies.

To strengthen oversight, Minister Awad directed the Solid Waste Management Unit to work with the Ministry of Environment and local governorates to carry out field inspections. These inspections will ensure that waste management services provided by private sector companies align with required standards and effectively address community needs.
