Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk on Sunday reaffirmed the strategic importance of the sugar sector to national food security and called for greater efficiency and modernisation across the industry.
In a meeting with Salah Fathy, CEO of the state-owned Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, Minister Farouk emphasised the need to upgrade production lines, improve operational performance, and comply with international quality and safety standards.
The talks addressed key challenges facing the sector, including global supply chain disruptions, and outlined plans to expand local production and reduce dependence on sugar imports.
The minister urged closer coordination between the company and ministry departments to ensure stable domestic supply, particularly in the face of external market volatility.
Fathy, in turn, presented updates on factory operations, rehabilitation of aging facilities, and ongoing efforts to strengthen workforce skills and sustainability practices within the company.
Egypt, one of the Arab world’s most populous countries, considers sugar a staple commodity and closely monitors its availability and price stability amid global food security concerns.
