Mo Salah scores two, misses two penalties in eventful night with Egypt
Egypt’s Mohamed Salah was in the thick of the action as Egypt cruised to a 6-0 win in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger on Saturday.
The Liverpool man had a hand in four goals on the night, but it could have been more were it not for two misfires from 12-yards out.
Salah had the chance to put his side ahead from the spot in the first minute, only to see his effort well-saved low to the goalkeeper’s right-hand post.
He didn’t take long to make amends as he produced an incisive pass to pick out Marwan Mohsen, who finished from close range for the opener.
Ayman Ashraf later added a second for Egypt, before Salah saw a second penalty saved – only this time he managed to prod home the rebound.
After setting up Salah Mohsen for a fourth, Salah himself was back on the scoresheet to make it five with a simple header from inside the six-yard box. Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny soon wrapped up the win with a deflected effort in the 90th minute.
The penalty misses aside, two goals, two assists and an unscathed Salah equate to an ideal night as the Liverpool man strives to rediscover his top form.
It hasn’t been a blistering start to the new Premier League season for the no.11 as far as his performances are concerned, although it’s worth noting he already has two goals and an assist to his name.
Any concerns over his form can be somewhat eased in light of his joint league-high tally of 13 chances created alongside Manchester City’s David Silva.
He isn’t just serving as a familiar goal threat, but proving himself as a valuable technician in Jurgen Klopp’s setup.
