Morsi says will abstain from eating, can’t trust food offered to him in prison

Former president Egypt Mohamed Morsi told a court on Saturday that he will abstain from eating as he cannot trust the food offered to him in prison, reported Aswat Masriya.

Morsi, who said that his life is in danger inside prison, also requested that he be referred to a medical team, explaining that he is suffering from low blood pressure.

The former president was attending a session in his trial on charges of espionage. He, along with ten others, is accused of leaking classified documents to Qatar concerning Egypt’s intelligence services and armed forces during his one-year presidency.

The court adjourned the case until Sunday, when a hearing is scheduled for witnesses for the prosecution.

The court also ordered that Morsi be referred to a medical team for examination.

Egypt has accused Qatar of supporting Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood group, especially through its news network Al Jazeera, but Doha has distanced itself from these claims.

Morsi received a death sentence in June on charges of conspiring to escape from prison in 2011. He also received a 25-year sentence in another espionage case.

In addition Morsi was sentenced to 20 years in prison in April on charges of inciting violence and torture in incidents that took place in the vicinity of the presidential palace during his time in office.
