Myanmar is making progress in its renewable energy sector, with 11 solar power plant projects currently being developed, totalling 1,026 megawatts in installed capacity, according to the Electricity and Energy Development Commission.
Among these projects, four are being built in the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw, three in the Mandalay region, one in the Bago region, and one in Shan State, collectively contributing 530 MW.
Additionally, two hybrid projects—combining gas engines with solar power—are underway in the Mandalay region and Magway Region, adding a further 496 MW to the national grid.
Currently, the country has 28 hydropower plants, 27 thermal power plants, and eight solar power plants, totalling 6,371 MW capacity. However, electricity production has been impacted by power line damage caused by attacks and natural disasters.
The Electricity and Energy Development Commission has prioritised energy infrastructure development to support daily livelihoods and economic growth, attracting both local and international investment in the sector.
