The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.8 million Toyota RAV4 SUVs over concerns about potential battery-related fires.
The probe focused on incidents involving RAV4 models from 2013 to 2018, examining fires originating from the battery compartment.
“The reported fires took place in vehicles known to contain aftermarket batteries or whose age exceeded the expected life of the original equipment battery,” NHTSA added.
The agency identified specific engine bay components that contributed to the issue, including contact between the battery hold-down bracket and the positive terminal of the 12-volt battery.
