NYSE, Nasdaq to close on Jan. 9 in tribute to ex-president Jimmy Carter

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will suspend trading on January 9 to honour the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter. Both exchanges announced on Monday that their equity and options markets will be closed next Thursday for a National Day of Mourning. Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on Sunday in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100.

Nasdaq observed a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m. ET on Monday and displayed a tribute to Carter on its Nasdaq Tower in New York. “On behalf of Nasdaq, we extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family,” said Nasdaq President Tal Cohen.

The NYSE, owned by Intercontinental Exchange, announced that its US flag would fly at half-staff in Carter’s memory.

“During his noteworthy post-presidential life, President Carter left an enduring legacy of humanitarianism. The NYSE will respectfully honor President Carter’s lifetime of service to our nation by closing our markets on the National Day of Mourning.” said NYSE Group President Lynn Martin.
