The total number of Peru’s coronavirus cases have topped 20,000, doubling in just nine days.
The pandemic continues to disrupt the economy of Peru, the world’s No. 2 copper producer.
The Peruvian health ministry said on Thursday it expects the number of virus patient to peak within days or in the following week.
Peru confirmed its first coronavirus case on March 6 and took only 25 days to pass 1,000 cases. It took only 14 more days to surpass 10,000 cases on April 14, according to a Reuters tally. On Thursday, cases doubled again to 20,914 confirmed infections.
Peru has a total of 572 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus.
The country has the second highest number of cases in South America after Brazil, despite a tough lockdown aimed at controlling the spread of the pandemic.
