Philippines targets 1,200 MW of N. power by ’32

The Philippines unveiled on Wednesday its Nuclear Energy Roadmap, aiming to have operational nuclear power plants by 2032 with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW), increasing to 4,800 MW by 2050.

During the high-level General Debate, Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Sharon Garin outlined the country’s plans to develop a nuclear programme using the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) milestones approach.

Garin highlighted the Philippines’ commitment to establishing an independent nuclear regulatory authority to oversee the safe development of the country’s nuclear energy programme.

The government is prioritising the passage of key legislation to ensure nuclear safety and regulatory frameworks are in place to protect public health, the environment, and national security as the country moves towards nuclear power.
