Pompeo hints to ‘significant amount of evidence’ that coronavirus emerged from China lab
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told ABC on Sunday that there was “a significant amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus emerged from a lab in China.
“The best experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point,” Pompeo said, but without providing any details about the evidence.
However, when the ABC interviewer pointed out that was not what U.S. intelligence services had concluded, Pompeo said, “I’ve seen what the intelligence community has said. I have no reason to believe that they’ve got it wrong.”
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had a high degree of confidence the coronavirus outbreak originated from a Chinese lab. However, U.S. intelligence officials said they have concluded that the virus was “not manmade or genetically modified.”
